So as my time in Mahajunga is finishing up, I’ve had to start making plans for moving onto my next destination: Fort Dauphin. Unfortunately, despite the fact that Mahajunga has an airport, in Madagascar you need to fly to and from Tana and cannot fly in between other cities. This kind of sucks. Since flights costs about $150 for a one-way ticket, this means I’ll be taking a 10 hour Taxi-Brousse back to Tana on Monday and flying out on Wednesday. Wah. But! On the bright side, I get to see my Tana homestay family and spend the night there! This is why I’ve titled this post “Getting adjusted is weird…”
I just got off the phone with my Tana homestay Mom and had a giant wave of relief and excitement after confirming that I could have dinner with them and spend the night. It kind of feels like I’m going home… I’m so looking forward to telling them about all the strange and miserable things that have happened here, and also the good things, but it just feels a little bit like returning to the comforts of home. Of course this is funny to me, since on arriving to Tana I pathetically complained about the single cockroach running around my room and the time they cooked me a soup with chicken feet in it, and now I’m like BRING ME BACK TO ONE COCKROACH LIFE AND FEED ME CHICKEN FEET! Make fun of me for not wanting to get fat instead of dumping spoonfuls of rice on my plate and becoming offended when I don’t take seconds (damn village family… arg!). Laiz, play chess with me! Everyone speak French! I just want to talk in French with you all dinner long and not have to learn weird words in Malagasy that are never going to be relevant to my time here. Take me away from mosquito land L. So yeah… I’m a little bit excited to see my Tana homestay family again, especially now that we’re all Facebook friends and have been exchanging messages in poorly written French. God, I love these people.
